You might be using a different client.

Open the new minecraft launcher
Click New Profile.
Name it anything.
On the minecraft version dropdown, select "1.7.2."
Click "save profile"
Select the profile you just created in the profile dropdown.
If it still doesn't work, make sure your using the original minecraft client, and that it's on version 1.7.2 or 1.7.4
